Thank you for posting this and for having the courage to write very poignantly to the founders of the organization. I worry, with the future in the internet's hands, is this the type of non-profit international development work that will be all the more common? More and more, it seems like we choose not to try and understand people who may be encountering social injustices, because it takes too long. Because it's complex, as humans tend to be. This chic fix-it western approach gnaws at concepts such as 'partnership' and 'solidarity', leaving me concerned that the business of development is really just that. A transacation.

I love your letter Lisa.
Remarkable that she didn't address your concerns regarding the types of perceptions this fosters, at all!

Thanks for posting these advertisements. Wow the Germany one is shocking. I think more shocking than the images are the ideologies held by the creators of such campaigns and their honest belief that such a projection would be accepted by the wider public.

Hi Kagendo, I agree, this really is one of the more offensive ads I have ever seen. Yes it is truly appalling what companies can get away with in the name of "charity". Atleast it may illustrate how ridiculous our so called solutions to poverty in the 'developing world' are.

This is truly appalling. The idea that they have the audacity to associate innocent children with sexual acts is unacceptable. This is yet another case of poor-nography where people take poverty as a sign of primitivity and so do as they please to benefit themselves and perhaps make a few dollars for some starving child so they get a pat on the back. This is not ok... Where is the law when exploitation is running rampant? That's right... nowhere to be found!

Very interesting commentary. Ive met Adichie before and heard her speak about her work (at that annual Reading festival I always go to!!) and got a book signed for a friend although did not have a chance to read it myself - Half of a Yellow Sun. Id def. like to revisit it again.

I read a few pieces of African literature when I was younger, you should also check out Wole Soyinkas work (I dont know why my apostrophes dont affix themselves to your comment box so it looks like I have bad grammar,.. or maybe its just my inept PC)...

Anyway, good job on the write-up. Look forward to reading more!
